Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for FSWEP, you must be studying in Canada, or be a Canadian student studying abroad, and meet the following criteria:

  • Be a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in a recognized institution;*
  • Be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled;*
  • Be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term;* and
  • Be at least the minimum age to work in the province or territory where the job exists.

* For example, assuming a three-term academic year (fall, winter and summer):

  • A full-time student during the fall 2008 and winter 2009 terms who returns to full-time studies in the fall 2009 term is eligible;
  • A full-time student during the winter 2008 and summer 2008 terms who returns to full-time studies in the winter 2009 term is eligible.

Note: Students who are in their final year of academic study and who are not intending to return to full-time studies are only eligible to work part-time until the completion of their last full time academic term.

Organizations will ask you to provide proof that you meet these requirements.

Re-employment criteria

The PSC may authorize the re-employment of a student in an identical or similar job in the same or another organization if he or she meets the following conditions:

  • Was initially selected through FSWEP, the Research affilialed program (RAP) or the Co-op/Internship program;
  • Meets all of the requirements of the job;
  • Continues to meet the eligibility criteria described above; and
  • Submits an on-line application for employment in the current campaign.

To be considered for re-employment, students must satisfy each of the above requirements.

*Part-time students

Part-time students are currently ineligible for the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), but are encouraged to visit the Jobs Open to the Public Web site for possible federal employment opportunities.

Non-Canadian residents

While non-Canadians may apply to FSWEP, preference is given to Canadian citizens who meet the job requirements identified by the hiring organization. A Canadian citizen is a person who possesses Canadian citizenship by birth or through the naturalization process under the Canadian Citizenship Act.

Distance learning

Students with full-time status may be enrolled in a physical academic environment or through a distance education / on-line program. Those classified in the distance education / on-line program must be recognized as full-time students by their academic institution.
